THE WORLD NEEDS A U.N. SPACE FLEET
WE WILL TAKE NO FRONTIERS INTO SPACE!
We aim to create a space agency of all nations - a United Nations Space Fleet, in order to:
- keep war out of space and off other worlds
- develop re-usable orbital launch vehicles, thus bringing the cost of access to space down
- give humanity a lifeboat from environmental disaster on Earth by establishing self-sufficient colonies on the Moon and Mars

You might have been thinking that Pluto is just too far away for any detail on its surface to be seen. Actually the Hubble Space Telescope's resolution is a good deal sharper than Pluto's diameter, so it can pick out dark and light areas, though it's not quite good enough for the fine detail of craters and cracks, etc. For that, we will have to wait for the New Horizons probe to grab some pictures as it whips past on its way out of the solar system.

NASA's return to the Moon dropped by Obama
|
|
WASHINGTON — U.S. President Barack Obama’s plan to scrap NASA’s Moon-bound Constellation program and turn to private companies for launching astronauts into space provoked a strong bipartisan rebuke from the Alabama, Florida and Texas congressional delegations several days before the president was slated to deliver his annual budget request to Congress.

Several web sites have been carrying an article claiming that the SOHO sun-observing NASA satellites have picked up a large spherical object, the size of the Earth, but so close to the sun that it was in or close to the solar corona, the very thin and very hot region of gas surrounding the sun.

The full version of this story with accompanying images is here.
PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Cassini Spacecraft has captured the first flash of sunlight reflected off a lake on Saturn's moon Titan, confirming the presence of liquid on the part of the moon dotted with many large, lake-shaped basins.

The Chandra X-ray telescope has produced new data on the nebula NGC 6240 that has been combined with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope originally released in 2008. In 2002, the discovery of two merging black holes was announced based on Chandra data in this galaxy. The two black holes are a mere 3,000 light years apart and are seen as the bright point-like sources in the middle of the image recently released today by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Centre here. The detail in the image is truly stunning.
